Red Wharf Bay
Red Wharf Bay is situated to the east of the island near the town of Pentraeth. ‘Traeth Coch’ as it is known in Welsh stands out for its beauty and soft sandy beach. There’s a fantastic family pub right on the beach called the Ship Inn www.shipinnredwharfbay.co.uk which has won many awards for its delicious food.
Red Wharf Bay is renowned for its abundant bird life with Grey Plover, Shelduck, Purple Sandpipers and Dunlin all being regular visitors. For the very keen eyed there are also fossil corals to be found lodged in the rock and sand.
Red Wharf Bay is believed to have been a Viking haunt and a glorious find there unearthed beautiful carved silver arm rings dating from this time.
There are more gruesome tales attached to the beach, read on if you dare…
‘Traeth Coch’ is the older of the two names and, according to some accounts, dates back to a bloody Viking battle that took place here in 1170 and left the beach soaked in blood….
