Watersport Activities in Anglesey

Naturally visitors are never far from the coastline. With its impressive ancient sea cliffs, sheltered sandy bays, remote coves, calm or wild waters and smaller offshore islands, visitors can enjoy pursuits such as surfing, windsurfing, kite surfing, scuba diving, water skiing, kayaking, canoeing or sailing, as well as fishing and swimming in waters warmed by the Gulf Stream.

Wrecks off the Anglesey coast

With over 100 wrecks to explore in clean, clear waters and a profusion of marine life, divers have the ultimate underwater experience. One of the most important finds is the Royal Mary which was owned by King Charles II and sunk in 1675. There are diving schools on Anglesey which offer a wide range of services including tuition and training, equipment hire and servicing, together with boat charter.

There are facilities for maritime pursuit all along the coast and four main centres for watersports and marine based activities at Beaumaris, Holyhead, Trearddur Bay and Rhosneigr. There are four sailing clubs and a yacht club on the Island.

Meanwhile, guided canoe and kayak trips are available around the dramatic and inspiring coastline. In 2006, Anglesey was the home of the 2006 Corona Extra European Kite Surfing Competition.

Annual festivals celebrate the waters around Anglesey. The Menai Strait Regattas (July-August) is a series of yacht races and events held around the Island. Billed as “The Family Regatta” this is a true sailing enthusiasts festival with races organised in 19 classes for all sorts of craft including classic boats and even Celtic skiffs. The Anglesey Offshore Dinghy Race between Beaumaris and Red Wharf Bay in August, regularly attracts up to 100 of the best dinghy sailors from all over the UK and Europe. There is also the annual Holyhead Maritime Festival, held at the Holyhead Maritime Museum (August/September) which includes coastguard and lifeboat displays together with diving activities.

Other Anglesey Activities

Action away from the water includes mountain climbing, cliff hanging, motor-racing, hiking, woodland rambling, quad biking, painting, walking and golf.

With its impressive variety of landscapes and wildlife, Anglesey has an extensive network of coastal and inland paths for walkers. Follow the 125 mile Coastal Path which is suitable for walkers of all abilities and in parts for cyclists and horse riders. Covering 95% of the coast, you will cross farmland, coastal heath, dunes, salt-marsh, foreshore, cliffs and pockets of woodland.

Golfing in Anglesey

Anglesey also caters for golfers of all levels with excellent facilities and a scenic backdrop unparalleled by any other location. A variety of golf courses have been painstakingly crafted, offering one of the finest collections of facilities in Britain. Whether you are taking your first swing, looking at learning the true magic of the game or a professional golfer, Anglesey offers an Island Golf pass so you can experience first hand the undulating pleasures of its five premier courses; Anglesey, Baron Hill, Bull Bay, Princess and Holyhead for only £79.
