Anglesey Sea Salt wins protected status

Anglesey Sea Salt has been awarded protected food name status by the European Commission and joined the ranks of Welsh Ham, Champagne and Cornish Pasties. This is expected to benefit the family-run business which has been harvesting and packing sea salt from the Menai Straits for fifteen years. Halen Mon already sells to leading restaurants, major supermarkets and to outlets in 22 countries. It is hoped that the award will boost the business towards further expansion having also recently secured £1.2m to expand and build a visitor centre.

The Halen Môn story began with a saucepan of seawater boiling away on the kitchen stove to reveal salt crystals. From such humble beginnings this family business from Brynsiencyn, Anglesey has seen worldwide success.

Alison Lea-Wilson, from Halen Mon, said she was “absolutely delighted” with the European Commission award which officially confirms that when consumers buy Halen Mon Anglesey Sea Salt they are getting a product which has been harvested and packed in Anglesey.

Halen Mon have an on-site shop at Foel, near Brynsiencyn, which is open for business from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday. They have the full-range of products, as well as an extensive salt-based gift range including speciality salts, grinders, foodstuffs, pepper. When available, they also sell local bara brith, apple juice and honey, as well as a selection of art works and local fare.

Halen Mon is adjacent to the Anglesey Sea Zoo on Anglesey, alongside the Menai Strait with attractive views of the Snowdonia mountain range. Half a mile away is the Foel Farm Park with its rare breeds, tractor rides, chocolate shop, cafe and other attractions. These three venues combine to make a great day out for all the family.
